GSAFE is currently seeking nominations for the 2017 Educator of the Year Award and the Judi Devereux Community Activist Award. Each award will be presented at the 21st annual Celebration of Leadership on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Monona Terrace in downtown Madison. The recipients of these awards will have demonstrated a commitment to promoting just and respectful schools for all, with an emphasis on LGBTQ+ students and topics. These awards are open to all Wisconsin educators and activists, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
The Educator of the Year Award is given to a Wisconsin K-12 educator who has demonstrated a commitment to promoting just and respectful schools for all, with an emphasis on LGBTQ+ youth and topics. Survey after survey demonstrate that knowing even just one supportive adult at school makes a significant difference for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies in regard to their sense of belonging at school as well as their future aspirations. Additionally, the inclusion of positive portrayals of LGBTQ+people, issues, and history in the classroom curriculum increases LGBTQ+ students’ sense of safety and belonging, their school attendance and GPA, and future aspirations. GSAFE seeks to honor the critical impact educators have on LGBTQ+ students and their allies through this award.
The Judi Devereux Community Activist Award was first presented in May 2010. The award recognizes an individual that best exemplifies the spirit, vision, values, leadership and transformational activism embodied by the late community activist Judi Devereux, and who contributes to improving the lives of members of the LGBTQ+ community in the state of Wisconsin. The qualities that made Judi Devereux special included her giftedness at gathering together a group and tapping into the power of collaboration and collective creativity that transformed the people involved and made a meaningful impact upon the greater community. She advanced values of connectedness, identity and doing what is right for the greater good. Judi lived boldly and had an enormous capacity to love, laugh, encourage, inspire, take risks, work toward a common goal and envision a world that values and celebrates all members of the LGBTQ+ community.
