Sample GSA Mission Statements

A mission statement is a brief description of an organization’s purpose and focus.  Some schools require clubs to present a mission statement before they’re approved.  A good mission statement should provide responses to the following question words: Who, why, and how.  Who are you?  Why do you exist?  How do you plan to accomplish your goals?

Every GSA is different.  Some act more as a social-support group, and some focus more on education and advocacy.  Here are a few sample mission statements to get you started:

Social-Support GSA Mission Statement

The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at North High School provides a safe and welcoming space for any student who wants to talk about issues related to sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.  We play games, do team-building activities, watch movies, eat snacks, and talk about what’s going on in our lives.  Everyone is welcome to come, regardless of identity.

Educational GSA Mission Statement

The Gay-Straight Alliance at Central Middle School seeks to create greater awareness about the issues and unique experiences faced by the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning (LGBTQ) community.  We hold regular discussions on a variety of topics, invite guest speakers to come, take field trips, and create informative displays for the school.  Come learn with us!

Advocacy GSA Mission Statement

East High School’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) works to create a school community where all students feel welcome and supported, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.  We organize events like Ally Week, Transgender Day of Remembrance, GSA Day for Racial Justice, and Day of Silence to create more visibility for LGBTQ+ people and issues.  We work with other student orgs to change policy and improve our school climate for all students.

The reality is that most GSAs are a combination of social-support, advocacy, and education.  There is no right or wrong way to do it.  Create a mission statement that works for you!
